I don’t know why but phrase “phone it in” drives me absolutely crazy. Seriously, did I miss the memo that went out that every blogger has to start using the phrase phone it in?
Scheduling all your tweets instead of truly interacting? You phoned it in.
Writing a book about a popular subject just because you don’t have any fresh ideas? You’re phoning it in.
Decided to microwave leftovers for dinner instead of cooking a fresh meal? You phoned it in.
See how dumb that sounds? Good. I’m glad we’re in agreement.
I didn’t have any ideas to write about last night. So in honor of this terrific cliché, I am writing a post about what I have on iPhone homescreen. You know, I’m iPhoning it in.
I think what someone has on their homescreen says a lot about them. First I hope you noticed my custom carrier. Yes, I’m am a hacker. ToeKnee. Get it? Get it? Nevermind.
From this screenie you might notice the Dictionary app. Yes, I am a word nerd. I look up words all day. Even words that I am familiar with. I love etymology and I truly am one of those people that likes to mean what I say.
I also have the Holy Bible on my homescreen. Mostly to impress you right now. Secondarily, because YouVersion has really an awesome app. I love being able to easily flip to different translations on the fly.
I’m a social media addict so Twitter and Facebook are most certainly present. I use the free Twitter for iPhone app. But I do have like 7 other Twitter apps on my second page.
Yes, I love iPhone games. Right now the one I play the most is Words With Friends. After that I split pretty equally among Angry Birds, Bejeweled and Fruit Ninja. I have two folders of games but I mostly only play those 4.
So there. I have officially phoned it in.
What do you think about that phrase? Also iPhone or not, let me know what apps you have on your homescreen.

My brothers gave me Apple gift cards for my b-day and DEMANDED I give up my Flintstone phone and get a G4.
What’s a girl to do?
I just pictured you with one of those brick car phones from the 80s. That was funny.
I have a simple cell phone from Verizon which is 4 years old. It makes calls just fine. Texting is slow, but still works. There is no screen with multiple apps. Recently we were looking at cell phones and may upgrade to one with a keyboard. But I don’t know if I want to.
I do Twitter from my computer. Scheduling some tweets keeps me from blasting my followers with 15 tweets in a few minutes. I like to think they appreciate my thoughtfulness. But I like to chat on Twitter, too. I just do it from my lap top while I’m doing other things online or taking a coffee break. I enjoy the conversation.
At the same time, I enjoy walking away from it all. At some points every day, I leave the technology. I go for walks, clean the house, cook meals, talk to my husband, watch birds, do errands, and so forth. Without any technology. The change refreshes me.
For me, keeping a balance is important.
Balance is good. I’m continually working on that in my life.
To the term “Phone it in” – I have generally thought was about someone just giving up.
I do not have an iphone so the apps thing —- well —-I have no answer for.
I’m pretty sure it means that instead of actually showing up to do something, you just call in. Another way of saying that you’re not making a real effort.
Fruit Ninja…sounds “appealing”!
Classic!
Just got an iPhone last week so I am still learning it. hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
I am forwarding this post to my wife since she is a game nut…the kind you have on your phone. I will have to check out some of the other apps (however I am not currently on FB or Twitter. I may have to check out the Bible app.
We just got my pastor an iPad for his birthday. He was blown away. We gave him the gifts out of order and one of them was an iTunes gift card. When he opened the iPad he was like, “I was wondering what this was for, I don’t even have an iPod!”
Let me know if you have any questions about it Bill. There’s a wealth of really helpful apps. If you use Blue Letter Bible, you can find there free app. It’s not the prettiest app, but I like it for the Greek/Hebrew word lookups.
the bible app is from LifeChurch Bill.. It’s YouVersion…It’s way good.
And you said “Not Currently”
I used to like that saying. At one point, it was kind of a snappy thing to say, and kind of captured the sentiment well. I used it in my blog sometimes. I guess its cliched now, which is a little sad to me.
The guy who made angry birds definitely didn’t phone it in.
For the record, I wasn’t referring to anything I’ve read on your site.
And yes, Angry Birds is epic. Have you seen the Gizmodo comment meme about it?

Bible, Hootsuite, Facebook, and Google are on my front page.
I used to do words with friends but I got addicted and had to delete the application.
Words With Friends is pretty intense. I’m playing like 7 games right now. Learell is actually spanking me pretty good right now.
Learell spanked me all the time.
I quit when I had 17 games going at once.
The best is @PeterPollock…I was embarassed…seriously…
I’m a little disappointed that you don’t have Angry Birds Halloween on there. I have a bunch of apps I rarely use.
Phoning it in? Yeah, not a fan…
Nice rant, BTW. So proud…(sniff, sniff)
I honestly missed the Halloween version. I just went to the app store and saw it!
I really feel better after letting that out. Thanks for your inspiration. I learn from the best.
I hate the phrase and miss the phone. Loving the iPad though!!
I’m definitely considering going with an iPad. I may wait until the next iteration is released, though.
